Microtronica carries enterprise hard disk drives from Western Digital and Toshiba. In addition to an SAS interface, the key differences between enterprise HDDs and regular SATA HDDs are higher rotation speeds, cache sizes up to 64 MB, and suitability for continuous operation (24/7). In this regard duty cycle is an important factor, because even if an HDD runs 24 hours a day, this does not mean that it constantly reads and writes data.
Toshiba
In the 3.5-inch segment Toshiba offers the Falcon and Mustang series with 7,200 rpm rotation speed as SATA and SAS drives with a duty cycle rating of 50% and capacities up to two terabytes. These 3 Gb/s drives are suitable for use in cloud storage systems, data centres, entry level servers, Network Attached Storage systems and other business critical applications.
The AL12SE series is specified for critical data storage with a duty cycle rating of 100% and is available as SAS 6 GB/s drives running at 10,000 rpm. These are effectively 2.5-inch drives in a 3.5-inch frame and offer the typical advantages of a small form factor: higher energy efficiency, lower noise and vibration levels, and less heat dissipation. The MBF2xxLRC HDDs are ideally suited to business critical, energy aware and data intensive storage applications, such as midrange volume servers, mainstream storage arrays, blade servers and rackmount servers.
The AL12SE series is also available as 2.5-inch drives without the installation frame, with capacities up to 600 GB. Additional options include the MKxx01xxx SAS 6 Gb/s models with capacities up 300 GB and rotation speeds up to 15,000 rpm.
